Warbird Flight
If you’re planning a getaway to the Wairarapa, why not elevate your experience – literally – by taking to the skies in a vintage warbird? At Hood Aerodrome in Masterton, the New Zealand Warbirds Association offers unforgettable adventure flights that blend history, adrenaline, and breathtaking scenery.
A popular choice is the open-cockpit de Havilland Tiger Moth, a 1940s biplane that lets you feel the wind in your hair as you soar over the picturesque Wairarapa countryside. For those seeking a more exhilarating ride, the North American Harvard provides a powerful, aerobatic experience in a WWII-era trainer aircraft. Whether you’re after a gentle scenic flight or loops and rolls, flights can be tailored to suit your comfort and thrill levels.
Each flight includes a pre-flight briefing and safety overview, with the option to customize your route – be it over vineyards, coastlines, or rural landscapes. Flights typically last between 20 to 45 minutes, depending on the aircraft and flight profile. Minimum age requirements apply (14 years for most flights), and all flights are subject to weather conditions and aircraft availability.
Bookings can be made through the NZ Warbirds Association or directly with local operator Legend Aviation. Whether you’re an aviation enthusiast or simply looking to add a unique highlight to your holiday, a warbird flight over the Wairarapa is an experience you won’t soon forget.

Lake Ferry
Lake Ferry is a hidden gem on the Wairarapa Coast; it is the perfect place stop for our guests looking to explore off the beaten path. Located 35 km from Martinborough, it is a small settlement at the point where Lake Ōnoke merges into Palliser Bay. It offers spectacular coastal and mountain views, from the eye-catching Remutaka Range to the faint outline of the South Island.
Steeped in history, Lake Ferry was one of the earliest Māori and European settlement sites in the region. In 1850 a licensed ferry service began and the ferry operator opened the Lake Ferry Hotel in 1851. Today it remains the oldest licensed hotel in Wairarapa, serving hearty fish-and-chips and whitebait fritters in a relaxed, century-old building overlooking the estuary.
Fishing is the main draw, with beach surfcasting for snapper, blue cod, and eels. Guests should be mindful: currents at the lake’s mouth can be treacherous. The estuary and nearby Ōkorewa Lagoon brim with birdlife, especially in areas restored by the South Wairarapa Biodiversity Group (waiwetlands.org.nz).
From the holiday park or a leisurely picnic on the black-sand beach, visitors can take scenic walks or cycle along remnant settlement routes, linking to Cape Palliser, Putangirua Pinnacles, and the renowned seal colony at Ngawi. Note also that the Wairarapa is now an International Dark Sky Reserve, and Lake Ferry’s remote charms make it perfect for night walks under the southern skies.
In short, Lake Ferry offers a compelling blend of history, nature, and authentic coastal flavour – a must-stop on your “Wairarapa Undiscovered” journey.

Wairarapa Dark Sky Reserve
In 2023, Wairarapa joined an elite global group as it was officially designated an International Dark Sky Reserve – recognising the region’s pristine night skies, low light pollution, and deep cultural connection to the stars. Stretching from the Tararua Ranges to the Aorangi Forest and encompassing Martinborough, Greytown, and much of the South Wairarapa district, the reserve is now a must-see destination for stargazers and night-time adventurers.
On a clear night, the Milky Way arches overhead in astonishing clarity, while constellations like Matariki (the Pleiades), Orion, and the Southern Cross shine brightly in the inky blackness. Whether you’re a casual observer or a seasoned astrophotographer, this region offers a breathtaking window into the universe.
Explore the stars with local guides such as Star Safari and Stonehenge Aotearoa, who share both scientific insight and Māori celestial traditions, including the maramataka (lunar calendar). Highlights include guided night tours, telescope experiences, and special seasonal events timed with celestial phenomena.
Wairarapa Undiscovered can seamlessly incorporate the Dark Sky Reserve into your travel itinerary – whether you’re based in wine country, the coast, or countryside. We’ll match your trip with stargazing experiences from Star Safari suited to your pace and interests, including visits to Stonehenge Aotearoa, a working modern observatory and cultural astronomy centre near Carterton.
Far from city lights and surrounded by nature, the Wairarapa Dark Sky Reserve offers an awe-inspiring way to reconnect with the universe – and a night you’ll never forget.

The Pinnacles
Tucked along the wild southern coast of Wairarapa, near Cape Palliser and the fishing village of Ngāwī, the Putangirua Pinnacles offer one of the most striking and surreal landscapes in New Zealand. Towering stone spires, sculpted over millennia by erosion, rise like ancient sentinels from the earth – creating an atmosphere both eerie and majestic.
These dramatic formations were featured in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King as the eerie Dimholt Road, where Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli seek the Army of the Dead. It’s easy to see why this cinematic location was chosen – walking among the pinnacles feels like stepping into another world.
There are several walking tracks in the area, ranging from an easy 1-hour return hike to more adventurous loops offering sweeping views over Palliser Bay. The DOC-managed reserve includes native bush, riverbeds, and high viewpoints – perfect for photography and exploration.
Just a short drive from Cape Palliser Lighthouse and the local fur seal colony, the Pinnacles make an ideal stop on a full-day Wairarapa coastal adventure.
Wairarapa Undiscovered can incorporate the Putangirua Pinnacles into your itinerary – including guided options or custom day trips that blend natural wonder, cinematic history, and coastal charm.
Whether you’re a Tolkien fan, nature lover, or keen photographer, a visit to the Putangirua Pinnacles promises an unforgettable experience at the edge of the world.

The Martinborough Hotel
At the centre of one of New Zealand’s most charming wine villages, The Martinborough Hotel offers boutique luxury, rich history, and genuine hospitality — all just steps from world-class vineyards and cellar doors. Sitting proudly on the edge of Martinborough Square, the hotel occupies a prime location within a perfectly laid-out village – the town’s roads famously radiate from the square in the shape of a Union Jack flag, a unique nod to its colonial heritage.
Built in 1882, this elegant hotel blends Victorian charm with contemporary comfort. Its rooms are individually styled, many featuring French doors, high ceilings, and verandas overlooking the square. Downstairs, the Union Square Bistro & Bar serves up some of the region’s best cuisine – fresh, seasonal, and beautifully presented – alongside a broad selection of local wines, craft beers, and classic cocktails.
Whether you’re soaking in the afternoon sun with a chilled rosé on the verandah, enjoying a romantic dinner, or simply relaxing after a day of wine touring, The Martinborough Hotel delivers the perfect blend of comfort and class.
Wairarapa Undiscovered can help weave a stay or dining experience here into your wider itinerary – pairing wine tastings, stargazing, and scenic adventures with a stay in one of the Wairarapa’s most iconic buildings.
For visitors seeking boutique accommodation in a destination full of charm, flavour, and style, The Martinborough Hotel is simply unbeatable.

Winery Tours
Wairarapa is one of New Zealand’s most exciting boutique wine regions, celebrated for its elegant Pinot Noir, crisp whites, and welcoming cellar doors. While Martinborough is the most recognised hub – with a cluster of vineyards just a short walk or cycle from the town square – the wine trail extends beyond, with hidden gems to be found in nearby Gladstone, Masterton, and even parts of the rugged coastal South Wairarapa.
With a cool climate and long growing season, Wairarapa produces wines with character, structure, and depth – particularly Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay. Many of the wineries are small, family-run operations, offering intimate tastings and the chance to meet the people behind the wine. The atmosphere is relaxed, the pace unhurried, and the experience all the more special for it.
Martinborough’s compact village layout means visitors can easily explore a dozen cellar doors on foot or by bike – a rare and delightful feature in New Zealand’s wine scene. Many wineries also have on-site restaurants, picnic areas, or seasonal events, making it easy to spend a day soaking in the region’s flavours.
Wairarapa Undiscovered can help tailor a wine itinerary that matches your tastes and interests – whether you’re after a leisurely tasting tour, behind-the-scenes vineyard experience, or a wine-and-food pairing adventure.
In Wairarapa, world-class wine meets small-town charm – creating a wine lover’s paradise with a distinctly personal touch.

The White Swan
In the heart of charming Greytown stands The White Swan Country Hotel, a beloved landmark known for its boutique charm, warm hospitality, and extraordinary backstory. But this iconic building wasn’t always here…
Originally built in the 1900s as a railways administration block in Lower Hutt, the structure was relocated to Greytown in 2002 – an ambitious and unforgettable journey. During its transport across the winding Remutaka Hill Road, one section famously slipped off the truck and tumbled into a ravine, causing a regional stir and adding to the hotel’s legendary status. Thankfully, no one was hurt – and the building was soon restored and reopened as one of Wairarapa’s most distinctive accommodations.
Today, The White Swan blends vintage character with modern comfort, offering stylish rooms, an inviting restaurant and bar, and sunny verandas perfect for people-watching on Greytown’s boutique-lined Main Street.
